International Pronouns Day seeks to make respecting, sharing, and educating about personal pronouns commonplace. Referring to people by the pronouns they determine for themselves is basic to human dignity. Being referred to by the wrong pronouns particularly affects transgender and gender-nonconforming people. Together, we can transform society to celebrate people’s multiple, intersecting identities.

What is International Pronouns Day?

International Pronouns Day began in 2018 and takes place on the 3rd Wednesday of October each year.

WHAT ARE PERSONAL PRONOUNS AND WHY DO THEY MATTER?

Whether we realize it or not, people frequently refer to us using pronouns when speaking about us. Often, in many languages when speaking of a singular third person, these

pronouns are linked to a gender such as “he” to refer to a man/boy or “she” to refer to a woman/girl. However, these common norms are not always accurate or helpful.

In general, people assume the gender of another person based on the person’s appearance or name. These assumptions aren’t always correct, and they send a potentially harmful message based on stereotypes that people must appear in a certain way to show the gender that they are or are not.

By using a person’s correct personal pronouns, we show a way to respect them and create an inclusive environment as well as when we call a person by their name show respect for them. Another way to look at it is how it can be offensive or even harassing to make up a nickname for someone and call them that nickname against their will, it can be very offensive or harassing to assume someone’s pronouns and refer to them using those assumptions about their pronouns if that is against the way the person wants to be known. Even worse, choosing to disregard someone's choice of pronouns that they go by could imply the oppressive message that intersex, transgender, nonbinary, and gender-nonconforming people do not or should not exist.

When we refer to "personal" pronouns, we are referring to a unique and individual person.

I hope that now you understand why pronouns matter.
