For many people, vaginal discharge has long been viewed as something embarrassing, unhygienic or simply inconvenient. Yet normal vaginal discharge is one of the clearest signs that your body is functioning exactly as it should.


Far from being something to ignore, discharge provides valuable information about your vaginal and urinary health. Learning what is normal for you—and recognising when it changes—can help you detect infections early, understand hormonal changes, and become more confident in caring for your intimate health.


Why Does Vaginal Discharge Occur?


The vagina is a self-regulating organ. Cells lining the vaginal walls and cervix continuously produce fluid that serves several essential functions.


Normal vaginal discharge helps to:


  • Remove dead cells and debris from the vaginal canal

  • Maintain healthy lubrication

  • Support the vagina's naturally acidic pH

  • Carry beneficial bacteria throughout the vagina

The amount, consistency and appearance of discharge naturally changes throughout the menstrual cycle. Hormonal fluctuations, ovulation, pregnancy, sexual arousal, stress and even certain medications can all influence what you notice.

Your Vaginal Microbiome Shapes Your Discharge


One of the biggest influences on discharge is the vaginal microbiome.


In most healthy reproductive-age women, the vaginal microbiome is dominated by Lactobacillus species. These beneficial bacteria produce lactic acid, maintaining a vaginal pH of approximately 3.8–4.5. This acidic environment helps suppress the growth of bacteria associated with bacterial vaginosis (BV), yeast overgrowth and other pathogens.


Because discharge reflects the activity of both vaginal cells and resident microbes, it acts as an external indicator of what's happening inside the vaginal ecosystem.


Healthy discharge is typically:


  • Clear, white or slightly creamy

  • Mild-smelling or almost odourless

  • Variable in consistency throughout the menstrual cycle

  • Not associated with itching, burning or discomfort


There is considerable variation between individuals, and understanding your own normal pattern is often more useful than comparing yourself to others.


When Changes in Discharge Can Signal an Imbalance

Although discharge changes naturally, persistent or sudden alterations can indicate disruption of the vaginal microbiome.
